Community Healthcare Promotion
There is much needed awareness about all aspects of health care in the UK. Especially to the Black and Ethnic Minorities, after a report from the London Health Commission in 2005, showed that the Black and Ethnic Minorities are more likely to have poorer health than white groups due to the lack of information and awareness of the services that are available to them; as well as the language and cultural barriers . Shattered Lives are committed to provide information on all aspects of health care to these communities and invite healthcare organisations and other community institutions to partner with us to get the much needed information to these communities.
HIV / AIDS
More Black and Ethic Minority people are affected by sexual transmitted dieses including HIV/AIDS, Chlamydia Gonorrhoea Genital herpes, Syphilis, Genital warts amongst others. Unfortunately sexual transmitted dieses have become common in the nation as a whole with nearly half a million new cases reported in 2010.
In light of this we work with a variety of organisations to promote sexual health prevention awareness as well as deliver community based Well-Being programs and projects including;
- Outreach clinics for rapid HIV/AIDS testing (so people are diagnosed earlier so they receive treatment as early as possible)
- Media campaigns that promote sexual health prevention – (giving people the information they need to help them stay safe)
- Seminars (with speakers that include people living with HIV/AIDS)
Sickle Cell & Anemia
Sickle cell & sickle cell anemia is a genetically transmitted disease that affects people worldwide and is commonly found among the Ethnic Minorities groups mostly the Black and Asian communities.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) was once thought to be a rare disease; however research now shows that about 12,500 people have SCD in the UK. The growth of this epidemic and the numbers of people dying and critically ill can be prevented by creating more awareness of prevention and providing more information on how to live with SCD.
Shattered Lives are passionate about this and are devising and delivering activities that create awareness all over the world including;
- Creating leaflets with information about the disease and distributing
- Including information in community focused press and broadcasts
- Organising events and seminars that address the issues associated with SCD
- Providing support to those living with the disease
